Wheelchair Rugby League Australia thanks John Wilson for outstanding contribution 

Wheelchair Rugby League Australia (WRLA) has acknowledged and thanked Director John Wilson for his significant contribution to the sport as he steps down from the Board following five years of service. 

John joined the WRLA Board as the NRL representative, bringing extensive experience in Rugby League participation and development, including regional and state executive leadership roles. 

During his time as a Director, John was a passionate advocate for Wheelchair Rugby League, helping strengthen stakeholder relationships, support the organisation’s strategic objectives, and position the sport for continued growth across Australia and internationally. 

His contribution has coincided with a period of significant progress for the sport, including increased participation, stronger engagement with commercial and government partners, the establishment of major events, and deeper connections across the Rugby League community. 

WRLA Chair Darren Gocher thanked John for his service and commitment. 

“John has made a significant contribution to Wheelchair Rugby League and has been a genuine supporter of what we are working to achieve,” said Darren.  

“His knowledge of the game, particularly across participation and development, has been incredibly valuable to our Board. Equally important has been his willingness to advocate for Wheelchair Rugby League and the people who have worked so hard to build it. 

 “We are extremely grateful for his contribution.” 

WRLA CEO Anna Fitzgerald also acknowledged John’s role in the growth of the sport. 

“John has always understood the enormous potential of our sport and the importance of creating opportunities for more people to experience Rugby League in all its formats,” said Anna. 

“He has been a staunch advocate for Wheelchair Rugby League. Without his advocacy, vision and collaboration, we would not have been able to establish the NRL Wheelchair Championship or expand our national footprint. 

“His understanding of participation and development, combined with his extensive relationships across Rugby League, has helped strengthen our connection with the NRL and create greater opportunities for Wheelchair Rugby League. 

“As a colleague, I have valued John’s partnership and collaborative approach. We are sincerely grateful for everything he has contributed and wish him every success in the future.” 

WRLA thanks John for his service to the Board and his lasting contribution to the growth of Wheelchair Rugby League and wishes John and family all the very best for the future.
