Wheelaroos

The Wheelaroos, Australia’s premier Wheelchair Rugby League team, unite the nation’s top athletes to compete domestically and internationally. Renowned for their exceptional skill and bold, uncompromising style of play, the Wheelaroos proudly hold a position among the top tier Wheelchair Rugby League teams globally.

Their achievements reached new heights during the 2022 Rugby League World Cup, where the wheelchair competition shared equal branding, profile, and support with the men’s and women’s tournaments for the first time. The Wheelaroos advanced to the semi-finals, showcasing their passion, resilience, and the spirit of inclusion that defines Wheelchair Rugby League.

In 2024, the Wheelaroos added another chapter to their history, competing in the Test Series against the New Zealand Wheel Kiwis in Auckland. This inaugural trans-Tasman series intensified the traditional Australia-New Zealand rivalry and played a pivotal role in promoting and expanding Wheelchair Rugby League within the Pacific region.

The team continued its rise in 2025 during the historic Ashes Series against reigning World Champions England. In one of the most competitive international campaigns in the sport’s history, the Wheelaroos pushed England to the limit, coming agonisingly close to defeating the world’s best and further cementing Australia’s standing as a genuine powerhouse in international Wheelchair Rugby League. The series showcased the growing professionalism, intensity, and global appeal of the sport while inspiring fans and communities across both nations.

With three Golden Boot finalists — Zac Schumacher (2024 & 2025), Bayley McKenna (2024 & 2025) and Diab Karim (2022) — the Wheelaroos continue to demonstrate the world-class talent emerging from Australia’s Wheelchair Rugby League program.

Looking ahead to the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, set to be hosted in Australia, the Wheelaroos are ready to bring their bold and uncompromising style to the global stage once more. With the men’s, women’s, and wheelchair tournaments united again, the team is eager to inspire audiences and continue driving the growth of the sport across Australia, the Pacific and beyond.
