Wheelchair Rugby League Australia has made the following announcement of match officials ahead of Saturday’s 2023 Wheelchair State Challenge to be played at the Whitlam Leisure Centre, Liverpool.
Lead Referee: Steve Hewson
Defence Referee: Fred Fallah
In-goal Judges: Kale Popple / Cameron SullivanÂ
Lead Referee Steve Hewson has significant domestic and international refereeing and Wheelchair Rugby League experience. He refereed at the Rugby League World Cup 2021 and was Lead Referee at the 2021/2022 Wheelchair Rugby League Origin. As a former Wheelaroos Coach, Hewson is also an Australian Representative of the International Laws Committee.
Fred Fallah was a 2021 Wheelchair Origin Referee and also refereed the recent 2023 NSW Cup Grand Final and the 2023 NSW Country v NSW City match. Fallah is also an active member of Canterbury Bankstown RL Referees.
Kale Popple was the 2021 Wheelchair Origin In-Goal Judge, and he also refereed at the 2023 NSW Cup Grand Final and the 2023 NSW Country v NSW City match. Popple is a former member of Group 9 Rugby League Referees.
Cam Sullivan was the 2022 SEQWRL Grand Final and 2023 QLD Country V QLD City Referee. Sullivan is President of South East Queensland Wheelchair Rugby League and an NRL Wheelchair Participation Officer.
Spencer Kassimir has been named as the stand-by (non-travelling) referee.
NRL Wheelchair is currently seeking match officials to assist with community competitions with pathways, including representative opportunities such as Regional, Interstate and International Competition.
