Wheelaroos counting down to home World Cup as Wollongong celebrates 100 days to go

With Wollongong marking 100 days until Rugby League World Cup action arrives in the city, the Australian Wheelaroos are one step closer to the opportunity of representing Australia on home soil.

The Wheelaroos will take to the pitch one day later, beginning their World Cup campaign in front of family, friends and Australian fans.

For Wheelaroo Liam Luff, it is a moment he has been dreaming about.

“Playing in front of our families, friends and Australian fans is going to be an amazing experience,” Luff said.

“We can’t wait to showcase how fast, physical and skilful Wheelchair Rugby League is.”

The tournament represents another significant milestone for the sport in Australia, with all Wheelchair Rugby League matches to be played at the WIN Entertainment Centre. This will give fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the action throughout the competition.

Luff said the support of Australian fans could make all the difference.

“Every team wants to win a World Cup, but doing it in Australia would mean everything to us,” he said.

“We know we’ll have tough opposition, but having the crowd behind us gives us another level of belief.”

The World Cup also provides an opportunity to inspire the next generation, increase awareness of Wheelchair Rugby League and introduce the sport to new audiences.

Preparations are well underway, with the extended Wheelaroos squad recently coming together following the LCA NRL Wheelchair National Championships on the Gold Coast.

Excitement will continue to build over the coming months as the team prepares to wear the green and gold in Wollongong.
