Empowering Future Leaders: NRL Wheelchair Train the Trainer Session in Sydney

NRL Wheelchair and running game community came together at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park, for a Train the Trainer session, proudly funded by the NSW Office of Sport and Recreation. This initiative is part of a broader effort to grow the sport and empower new leaders in Wheelchair Rugby League across New South Wales, and subsequently expand nationwide.

Facilitated by two of the sport’s most respected figures, Edie George and Ralph Hasna, the session delivered a hands-on, engaging experience to NRL Game Development Officers, eager to deepen their understanding and coaching capabilities, providing an introduction into program delivery of the adapted wheelchair game.

Event Highlights

Participants dove into a series of interactive modules, including:

  • wheelchair basics and safety, and learning fundamental chair movements;
  • understanding of the rules of wheelchair rugby league and practising game skills and drills;
  • game scenarios and scrimmages; and
  • practical tips for delivering school and community sessions.

Building Capacity for the Future

This Train the Trainer session is a cornerstone of NRL Wheelchair’s commitment to expanding the sport’s reach. By equipping trainers with the skills and confidence to lead, the program ensures a sustainable future for Wheelchair Rugby League in NSW and beyond.

Special thanks to the NSW Office of Sport and Recreation for their continued support, to our dedicated presenters, Edie George and Ralph Hasna, for their leadership and passion, and to our NRL colleagues whose enthusiasm to learn about the game was evident throughout the session.
