The Board is seeking applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:

· Government stakeholder engagement and grants

· Human resources

· Fundraising and philanthropy

· Governance and risk

· Commercialisation and revenue development

This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of one of Australia’s most exciting and inclusive sports in the lead-up to the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, which will feature wheelchair rugby league (WRL) alongside the men’s and women’s competitions.

About Us

WRLA is the national not-for-profit peak body responsible for the development, governance and promotion of wheelchair rugby league in Australia.

Our vision is to be the preeminent wheelchair sport in Australia, from grassroots to elite levels. Our mission is to administer, promote, and develop WRL, providing opportunities for all.

We work with a passionate and growing community of players, volunteers, supporters and partners to drive awareness, inclusivity and excellence in this sport.

About the Sport

WRL is an inclusive, international game closely aligned with running rugby league. It offers pathways from recreation to high-performance levels for men and women of all ages and abilities. Players with and without disabilities compete together, making it one of the most inclusive codes in Australian sport.

The Opportunity

We are seeking new Directors who can make an active contribution to the strategic leadership of WRLA, with skillsets aligned to the focus areas mentioned above.

WRLA intend to appoint up to two Directors by Board resolution, with a further two Director roles to be elected at the upcoming AGM. Appointments will be for terms of one, two or three years, in line with WRLA’s Constitution.

In addition to typical Board responsibilities (e.g. attending meetings, reviewing performance, contributing to risk and governance matters), successful candidates will be expected to be involved in relevant committees and assist in various aspects of the organisation.

The WRLA Board values collaboration, transparency, and constructive challenge. Directors are expected to work closely with the CEO and committees, bringing their experience and insight to support the growth of the sport and the organisation.

Skills and Experience

We encourage expressions of interest from individuals with most or all of the following skills:

· Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the focus areas identified above

· Strong interpersonal, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills

· Experience in strategic planning, governance, or board-level decision-making (prior board experience is welcome but not essential)

· A collaborative mindset and commitment to inclusive sport

· Understanding of the Australian sporting landscape and/or not-for-profit sector is advantageous

Time Commitment and Meetings

The WRLA Board meets regularly (generally monthly online).

Directors are expected to read papers, contribute actively to discussions and decisions, and support the strategic work of the organisation.

Directors are encouraged to participate in Board committees and working groups, as appropriate to their skills and availability.

Directors may be invited to attend events and activities.

What You’ll Gain

· Contribute to an exciting, fast-growing sport that champions inclusivity

· Play a strategic role in building a legacy leading up to the 2026 World Cup

· Connect with a passionate community of players, volunteers and leaders

· Be part of a collaborative, forward-thinking Board and organisation

Please note: This is a voluntary position and is not remunerated.

WRLA values diversity and inclusion and is committed to providing a safe, fair and welcoming environment for all.
