Wheelaroos turn attention to semi-finals following tough France encounter

The AtkinsRéalis Australian Wheelaroos will regroup ahead of a blockbuster Rugby League World Cup semi-final against reigning world champions England after falling 69-34 to France in their final pool match on Friday night.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at Wollongong’s WIN Entertainment Centre, the Wheelaroos showed plenty of determination against a powerful French outfit, fighting back from an early 18-point deficit to level the scores before France took control in the second half.

The highly anticipated clash brought together two undefeated teams, with top spot in Pool B and a favourable semi-final draw on the line.

France made a strong start, racing to an 18-0 lead before the Australians responded with three consecutive tries.

Dan Anstey sparked the comeback, crossing for Australia’s opening try, before Adam Tannock and captain Bayley McKenna followed to bring the scores level at 18-all.

McKenna’s individual effort, featuring a perfectly timed dummy to break through the French defence, was among the highlights of an entertaining first half.

France regained the momentum with two further tries, but Diab Karim crossed late in the half to keep Australia within striking distance, trailing 30-22 at the break.

The Wheelaroos continued to fight after half-time, with Zac Schumacher crossing early in the second period to narrow the margin.

However, France demonstrated why they are among the tournament favourites, using their experience, physicality and attacking combinations to take control of the contest.

A succession of second-half tries put the result beyond Australia’s reach, although Tannock ensured the Wheelaroos finished with a positive moment, crossing for his second try in the closing stages.

Tannock’s double continued his impressive World Cup campaign, while Anstey, McKenna, Karim and Schumacher also featured on the scoresheet.

Despite the defeat, the Wheelaroos remain firmly in contention for the World Cup title, having secured their semi-final berth with convincing victories over New Zealand and Scotland in their opening two matches.

Speaking after the match, Cory Cannane acknowledged the quality of the French side but reinforced Australia’s determination to bounce back.

“They’ve got wisdom as well as size – they are always working on improvements,” Cannane said.

“We’ll go through the video from tonight because we’re definitely not done here.

“Our destiny is still in our hands.”

The result sees France finish undefeated at the top of Pool B and progress to a semi-final against Ireland, while Australia will face defending champions England.

The Wheelaroos will now turn their attention to reviewing Friday’s performance, refining their combinations and preparing for one of the biggest challenges of their World Cup campaign.

With a place in the World Cup Final on the line, Australia will be determined to deliver its strongest performance yet in front of the home crowd.
