Meet the Friedrich Brothers: United by Family, Powered by the Game
At the recent LCA NRL Wheelchair Championships, one of the most compelling stories to emerge was that of the three Friedrich brothers — all taking the field together for Team NSW. In a sport that champions inclusion and community, their presence is the living embodiment of what the championships, and the entire Wheelchair Rugby League movement stand for.

A Family United Through Sport
What makes the Friedrichs’ story so powerful is the intersection of family, sport and inclusion, something profoundly unique to Wheelchair Rugby League.
Sibling synergy – The Friedrich brothers bring an innate connection to the field: knowing each other’s tendencies, strengths and trust built over years. That chemistry translates into fluid teamwork on the court.
Inclusive opportunity – The championships showcase that Wheelchair Rugby League isn’t just for people with disability—it’s for everyone. Individuals with or without physical impairment can play alongside, and together. The Friedrichs’ participation highlights the potential for family participation in such inclusive sport.
Growth through coaching – Their development is supported by none other than coach Cory Cannane (of the Australian Wheelaroos), whose guidance has helped them evolve their game. The impact of strong coaching on inclusive teams cannot be overstated. Cannane was even coaching the the grand final, right before the Wheelaroos took on England in the 2nd Ashes Test.

What Their Story Teaches Us
Sport as connection: For the Friedrichs, the court becomes more than competition—it’s shared memories, mutual encouragement, and collective achievement.
Breaking barriers: Wheelchair Rugby League provides a space where traditional notions of ability and family roles are reframed. Seeing siblings play side-by-side sends a powerful message about accessibility and belonging.
Growth mindset: With Cory Cannane’s influence, the brothers aren’t simply participating—they’re improving, adapting and building confidence. That spirit mirrors everything we celebrate: growth, courage, resilience.
