Wheelaroos Show Grit in Ashes Opener Despite England’s Late Surge

Wheelaroos Zac Schumacher is given close attention by England Captain, Lewis King
The Wheelaroos delivered a spirited performance in the first Ashes Test on the Gold Coast, pushing England to the limit before falling 56–28 in a high-intensity clash. Despite the final scoreline, the Australians showcased resilience and skill in their first hit-out with England since the Rugby World Cup in 2022.
England came out firing, dominating the opening 10 minutes with three unanswered tries from Nathan Collins, Joe Coyd, and Rob Hawkins. Collins was clinical with the boot, converting all three to give the visitors an early 16–0 lead. The Wheelaroos found their rhythm through Zac Schumacher, who settled the side with a try and conversion at the 10-minute mark.
Captain Lewis King extended England’s lead, but a determined effort from Gold Coast local Daniel Anstey saw the Wheelaroos respond just before halftime, narrowing the gap to 22–12 at the break.

Australia came out of the blocks with renewed energy in the second half. Brothers Townsville’s Zac Schumacher crossed for his second try in the opening minute, followed by a brilliant solo effort from St George Illawarra’s Cory Cannane, who dummied and split the defence before racing away to the try line. Schumacher’s conversion gave the Wheelaroos their first lead of the match at 28–26, igniting hopes of a home victory.

With 20 minutes remaining, the match was on a knife’s edge. England, however, found another gear, responding with five unanswered tries to seal the win including a hatrick from Rob Hawkins.
Post-match, Schumacher reflected on the contest: “We didn’t get the result, but I’m proud of the team’s performance overall. We’ll focus on recovery and take a close look at what we can improve heading into the second test.”
The Wheelaroos faced adversity even before kick-off, with star playmaker Bayley McKenna ruled out due to injury. “I’d rather play well and lose, than not play at all,” McKenna said from the sidelines.
His absence opened the door for debutant Dylan Gawthorne, who stepped into the side. “The boys are so passionate, it was really exciting. I wasn’t expecting to get on the court so that was pretty special,” Gawthorne shared.
England’s Nathan Collins was named Player of the Match for his standout performance, scoring two tries and converting four goals.
The teams will meet again on Sunday 2 November at 3pm for the second test.
