Sector-leading Appointments by Wheelchair Rugby League Australia, Championing Progressive and Modern Governance
Wheelchair Rugby League Australia (WRLA) is proud to announce the appointment of three new highly experienced Directors to its Board.
The newly appointed Directors are accomplished leaders whose experience spans sport governance, commercial partnerships, business innovation, and inclusive community engagement.
With this announcement, WRLA achieves a Board composition that reflects gender parity, a balanced representation of expertise, and lived experience. This is a milestone for the sport, and a powerful statement of our values and commitment to good governance.
WRLA Chair, Darren Gocher, said the appointments mark a turning point for the organisation:
“This isn’t just a leadership update — it’s a sector-leading step forward in sport governance. We’re proud to lead by example, showing that true inclusivity must extend beyond the court and into every decision-making space. We believe, improved governance and innovation at Board level is premised on a rich diversity of experience and skills. Our Board sets a new benchmark for gender equity, innovation, and authentic representation in Australian sport.”
The newly appointed Directors include Michelle Nolland, Rachel Bowles and Yael Reed, joining a Board committed to growing the game nationally and internationally, strengthening pathways for players, and championing opportunities for all.
Michelle Nolland brings 20 years of senior leadership experience spanning major facility management and the recreation sector. Yael Reed offers a wealth of commercial acumen and sponsorship expertise, strengthening the Board’s capacity to grow strategic partnerships and long-term sustainability. Rachel Bowles complements the Board with a deep understanding and connection to our sport, paired with a proven ability to design and deliver high-impact, community-focused programs.
Late last year, the Board took a progressive step by appointing an inaugural CEO, Anna Fitzgerald — making her the only female CEO in Rugby League at the top level. Anna is an exceptionally capable executive leader who has a proven track record in strategic growth, governance, and transformation, across the sport and corporate sectors.
WRLA also recognises the invaluable contribution of its ongoing and outgoing Directors whose leadership has shaped the organisation’s strong foundation.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to outgoing Directors, Martin Meredith OAM, Pearl Forrester and Paul Moujalli,” said Gocher. “Their dedication has helped us grow from strength to strength, and we thank each of them for paving the way for this new era of leadership.”
The Board will now turn its focus toward high-performance development, grassroots growth, and strategic preparations for the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup — with a firm focus on equity and excellence at every level of the game.
