2018 Tamworth City Country Festival

NSW Wheelchair Rugby League traveled to Tamworth, NSW on 18-20th May to host the City Country Wheelchair Rugby League Festival. The purpose of the event was to promote wheelchair rugby league in the New England region and showcase the sport to local school, disability groups and the community. The event included a Wheelchair Rugby League Clinic and the annual NSWWRL City vs Country Representative Match.

The Wheelchair Rugby League Clinic involved a number of local Tamworth schools and disability organisations. The purpose of these clinics was to educate students about disabilities and to promote para sports through the wheelchair rugby league. Thank you to the following schools and groups for attending:

  • Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School

  • Peel Technology High School

  • Tamworth High School

  • Northcott Tamworth

  • Sunnyfield

The 2018 NSWWRL City vs Country Rep Match was the main event for the weekend, with a mixture of developing players, New South Wales and Australian representatives making up both teams. As usual, our players delivered a great spectacle for the local Tamworth crowd, showcasing the skills and spills involved in the sport. The passion and respect by players and the community for the sport illustrates why wheelchair rugby league continues to grow both locally and nationally.

This years City vs Country match once again demonstrated why it is one of the biggest events on our calendar. Both teams fought it out from the start, with scores being fairly even at half time. The second half saw the stronger City team create a large lead. This did not phase the Country side, who kept fighting right through until the last second of the match. Fortunately for City, their lead was too much for the other side, winning 42 - 28.

NSW Wheelchair Rugby League would like to thank the Tamworth community for their hospitality and support over the weekend, in particular, the Tamworth Regional Council for providing the funding to make make this event happen.

NSW Wheelchair Rugby League would like to expand the sport throughout the state, but we need your help.
